2011’s Rock of Ages (New Theatricals) was the archetypal 80’s rock musical. As a pastiche of bad boy rockers Stacee Jaxx , Michael plays a surprisingly manipulative hedonistic, himbo. Jaxx, former lead singer of fictitious 80’s hair metal band “Arsenal”, is dominated equally by his need for attention and a voracious sexual appetite. He seduces those who can sate his desires, and manipulates those who can’t. It is Michaels own good natured charm, which ultimately seduces audiences and makes a reasonably unlikeable character endearing. Michael’s evident enjoyment at playing such a larger than life character also adds to the sense of fun with which Rock of Ages has become synonymous.
